Rhinoceros Beetle Beginnings

ImageHere’s my first progress shot on my Rhinocerous Beetle pendant. I sawed the bottom piece out of plate copper and domed the head lightly before bending the horns up in a tube-type form. The body I textured with the long head of a riveting hammer before doming it. I left some small tabs to rivet it together when I was done.

If I were to try this again, I think I would dome the body first and then draw and cut out the bottom form based on the length that the dome wound up. As it is I wound up with a very tight fit between body and base, which I was briefly worried wouldn’t match up.

Needlepointing Ness

ImageNeedlepointing one of my favorite video game characters 🙂

This is Ness from Earthbound(or Mother 2 originally), a game from the Super Nintendo. This was inspired by the work from http://www.spritestitch.com/ , where they use stitches to represent pixels. This was an early attempt at cross-stitch, so it might not be quite as intricate as some of the work featured there, but I think the simplicity of the medium really complements the simplicity of the original game.

I’m trying to do a series of these of all four of the main characters, Ness, Paula, Jeff and Poo. A Starman one would be great as well, but cross-stitching is slow-going, and I might not make it there. Ness is since finished, so I’ll post a final image of that as soon as I can get it into a clear photo, and I’m about half-way through Paula, so she should be up soon.
